For the first five months of 2022, Kazakhstan officials have reported 350 cases of the parasitic tapeworm disease, echinococcosis.
Seventy-one cases were reported in children under the age of 14, a 2.6 times increase compared to the same period in 2021.
Echinococcosis is transmitted from animals to humans, caused by parasites – tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus. Human infection results in the development of one or more hydatid cysts, most commonly located in the liver and lungs and less commonly in the bones, kidneys, spleen, muscles, and central nervous system.
